Start a golf league

How to start a golf league, one decision at a time.

Starting a league comes down to a handful of decisions made in the right order. Settle the course and night first, then players, then format and handicaps, then the schedule. This guide walks through each one.

1. Lock in the course and night

Talk to the course about a weekly tee time block, the season length, and the per-player rate. Most weeknight leagues play 9 holes over 12 to 20 weeks. Agree on start and end dates before you recruit anyone.

2. Recruit regulars and subs

Aim for an even number of regular players so individual or two-person team matchups work out. Keep a separate list of substitutes for weeks when regulars cannot make it, and decide whether sub scores count toward team standings.

3. Choose a format

Individual stroke play is the simplest place to start. Two-person best ball or four-ball match play keeps team leagues social, and Stableford softens one bad hole. Write down how points are awarded each week and how ties are broken.

4. Set handicap rules

Decide how new golfers get a starting handicap, how many rounds count, and whether a handicap allowance applies to your format. Publish the rules before the first week so nobody argues about them in week six.

5. Build the schedule and score each week

List every week with its date, tees, format, and matchups, then share it with players. After each round, enter scores the same night so standings stay current. League Night handles the schedule, scoring, handicaps, and standings in one place.

Frequently asked questions

How many players do you need to start a golf league?

Eight to twelve regular players is a comfortable start for a weeknight league, with a few substitutes on call.

How long should a golf league season be?

Most weeknight leagues run 12 to 20 weeks, often with a short playoff or season finale at the end.

Do league golfers need an official handicap?

No. Many leagues track their own handicaps from league rounds. League Night can take a starting handicap or set one from a golfer's first complete round.
