Handicap guide
Golf league handicaps and strokes, explained.
Handicaps let golfers of different abilities compete in the same league. This guide covers how a league handicap is set, how it moves after each round, and how strokes are given on each hole, using the same rules League Night follows.
- Start with a known handicap or a first round
- Each round produces a differential
- Best 8 of the last 20 count
- Strokes go to the hardest holes first
Setting a starting handicap
If a golfer already has a handicap, enter it when they join. If not, their first complete round sets one. Write down which approach your league uses so new players know what to expect.
Turning a round into a differential
Each posted round becomes a score differential: the adjusted gross score minus the course rating, multiplied by 113 and divided by the slope rating. Rating and slope account for how hard those tees play, so rounds from different courses compare fairly.
Which rounds count
Once a golfer has 20 rounds, the handicap averages their best 8 differentials from the most recent 20. With fewer rounds, fewer differentials are used, with a small adjustment for golfers who have only three to six rounds.
Caps on sudden increases
After 20 rounds, a soft cap slows any rise of more than 3 strokes above the golfer's low point, and a hard cap stops it at 5. This keeps one bad stretch from swinging the handicap too far.
Giving strokes on each hole
Net scoring uses each golfer's stored handicap. Strokes go to holes in order of the hole handicap on the scorecard, starting with the hardest. In match play, the lower handicap plays at zero and the other golfer receives the difference.
Allowances for team formats
Some formats apply a percentage allowance to each golfer's handicap so team events stay balanced. League Night lets you set the allowance for each format, and strokes come from the stored handicap after that allowance.
Frequently asked questions
Do golf league players need an official handicap index?
No. A league can track its own handicaps from league rounds. League Night accepts a starting handicap or sets one from a golfer's first complete round.
How many rounds count toward a golf handicap?
The best 8 differentials from the most recent 20 rounds. Golfers with fewer rounds use fewer differentials.
How are strokes given in league match play?
The difference between the two golfers' stored handicaps, given on the hardest holes by the scorecard's hole handicap.
